Chapter 8 Discussion 1 - Diversity - Personal Perspective

Q 1. Recent events in our country highlight how our society still struggles to embrace diversity. Diversity of all types (cultural, abilities, personalities, generational, experiential) is one of my favorite topics; not because I have mastered my understanding but because I have personally seen the value diversity brings to a community, a classroom, an organization. 2. Studies show that diversity leads to more creative teams and increases a company's profits. (Zallis, 2017). As working professionals and responsible citizens, we must take time to understand the stories of others. 3. For this discussion, I'm asking you each to share your "diversity" experiences in a way that broadens and informs our understanding. All of you have some perspective to lend on diversity. Our textbook's description of diversity includes differences in culture, generations, and abilities. 4. Perhaps you have a family member who is in a wheelchair (mobility challenges), or you work frequently with a client who only speaks Arabic (language differences), or maybe you can share the challenges you face as a person with a "diverse" background (culture, ethnicity, or age group). 5. In your post, tell us what area of diversity you are discussing. What do we need to know about providing service or working with this group? What can you tell us to help us better understand, appreciate, and value diversity? 6. Your original post should be 150 words minimum. Please reply to two students with a substantive response (50 words minimum). 7. Zalis, S. (2017). The Truth About Diversity and Why It Matters. Forbes Magazine, November 30, 2017. Race/ethnicity is important for service providers to consider so that there is no biasness in greeting or treating customers of diverse races/ethnicities. African-American customers and customers belonging to other minority races can face different treatment in some shops preferring to sell to white-American customers. This is because there can be situations when specific varieties of products might not be shown to customers belonging to minority races.
